On Sunday evening, we were driving home from dinner. After a busy, tiring day, I was doing everything I could to distract them from bickering with each other.  I told them to look for airplanes. Not a hard task when you live close to not one, but TWO airports. As the girls were looking for the bright light of planes in the sky, they started to see the stars coming out.  I taught them this old poem, a poem I haven’t thought about for years:

Star light, star bright,

First star I see tonight.

I wish I may, I wish I might

Have the wish I wish tonight.

I told them to keep their wishes a secret, or they may not come true!

Tonight, I’m looking at a full moon casting shadows in our backyard. The sky is clear. The trees are waving gently in the wind. And I’m making some wishes of my own, wishes that are not so secret. Wishes that echo many other wishes tonight, in that we are hoping and praying that Hurricane Sandy doesn’t cause too much devastation on the East Coast.
