Fuzzy Buggy on Travel Tip Thursday!

This winter, we traveled back and forth from Chicago to Des Moines quite a few times. We spent a lot of time in the van, and one of the projects that kept my daughters occupied for a long stretch of time was a big bag of pipe cleaners. You can find them at craft stores under the name of “chenille stems”.

The girls had so much fun bending and twisting the pipe cleaners! These are a couple of the bugs I made for them. The bug on top is a lightning bug, and under that fellow is a bee with pink wings…by request from Emmy! The pipe cleaners were all one length, and next time I think I will have a variety of lengths available for them.

I read about pipe cleaner creatures on MomsMinivan.com, which is a great source for travel ideas! Do you have any tips on traveling with kids? Share them in the Lemon Drop Pie Community!

Happy Travels!

  1. What a great travel idea!! My little girl is not quiet old enough for that but I will definately remember that! When I was little we went on a lot of long road trips and we never had anything fun to do like that!

  2. Whenever my sister and I would go on holiday together, we would play hangman. It was a bit harder for me, since I would be driving and had to do the words by heart, but it is a great thing to do. Or make words from the numberplates you pass. I still do that now and will occasionally shout out a word that I will have made to the surprise and amazement of my passengers…

  3. Your blog is lovely! We always brought along comic books when we took long trips. My kids? iPods all the way.

  4. What a great idea! I love those bendy things! Jonathan has a blast with them too!Have I mentioned how much I love the new look? I hope I have because I looove it!

  5. I love this idea! And it's different enough from the usual to keep them occupied. Now when I'll be brave enough to go on another road trip with the kids is a different story. 🙂

  6. I love those little bees, they're just too cute. I remember playing with pipe cleaners when I was little!
