Sometimes it’s not the illustrations that make a children’s book so enjoyable to read, but the rhythm and sound of the words.
Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin
The cows find an old typewriter hidden away in the barn, Farmer Brown cannot believe his ears when he hears:
Click, clack, moo.
Click, clack, moo.
Clickety, clack, moo.
The cows are on strike! That barn is cold, and they are demanding electric blankets! What will Farmer Brown do?
My daughters love the sound of these words as I read the adventures on Farmer Brown’s farm. Click Clack Moo is a Caldecott Honor Book, so you may have seen this book around!
My Crayons Talk by Patricia Hubbard
A lesser known book that my daughters love is about crayons. It begins:
Talk. Talk.
My crayons talk.
Yackity. Clackity.
Talk. Talk. Talk.
Each crayon has something to say in rhyme, and the cadence and rhythm of the words drew my girls to this book right away. (Drew them to it–get it?)
