The other morning, I was up so early with my daughters that we sat in bed and watched the moon set. They actually sat still for a few minutes, instead of jumping and rolling around on the bed. The moon was shining in our western windows, and it lit up the whole room. Lily said she wished that it would last forever; it was so beautiful. Ed had already left for work, so it couldn’t have been that early. He leaves around 6:00 am, but it was still pretty dark in the mornings for that first week of Daylight Savings Time.
The other night, I caught the last hour of Moonstruck. One of my favorite movies…I love Olympia Dukakis as Cher’s (Loretta’s) mother. As she is eating in a restaurant by herself, a man (John Mahoney) gets into an argument with his date, who storms out. She invites him to join her, and since she suspects that her husband is cheating on her, she asks him, “Why do men chase women?” He replies, “I don’t know.” She says, “I think it’s because they fear death.”
At the end of the movie, Loretta’s engagement to one man ends, and then his brother proposes to her and she accepts.
In a way, that is my mother’s story.
She dated my uncle for a while in college, and they decided they weren’t right for each other. They remained friends, however, and some time later my uncle’s twin brother, my dad, asked her if he could borrow twenty dollars. She was in town for a job interview and happened to have the money, so she loaned it to him. When she came back into town, they met so that he could pay her back. He asked her out for coffee, and they were married nine months later.
It sounds so cute when my parents tell the story.
My father was so eager (nervous?) to propose to my mother that at the beginning of their date, he pulled the car over to the side of the road to ask her.
Oh, and the waiter at the restaurant where Olympia Dukakis is dining that night? His name is Bobo. One of our favorite Italian Beef joints is named…Bo-Bo’s.
There is a beer calling my name in the refrigerator. A Berghoff Rock River Red Ale, which I am very eager to try. I told myself if I finished a glass of water first, then I could have the beer. You know, because of the whole “water is healthier than beer” thing. I told Ed to not drink that beer, because I wanted it. I’m a little nervous, though. It’s the only beer left in the fridge, and that’s dangerous. If I leave a beer in there that is meant for ME, he just can’t help himself. He drinks it anyway. I’m surprised the red ale is still there. I’m going to go drink it now. My water is almost gone…promise!
(And yes, it is not really 6:00 in the morning. It is 8:30 at night. Time for a beer!)
Morning confession: I did not have the beer. I went to bed instead. But it was missing when I reached for the milk this morning. Hmm.
