The 100 and The Martian {Spin Cycle}

Why am I so drawn to a good apocalypse story? Twenty years ago, I adored the mini-series The Stand with Molly Ringwald, which was about life after a deadly virus killed most of the population. A year ago, I became entranced with The Walking Dead, which takes it up a notch and has a deadly virus turn people into zombies.

Now I’m hooked on The 100, another apocalypse story. This time, Earth was ruined by nuclear warfare, and mankind fled to a space station. When the space station starts to fail, 100 juvenile delinquents are sent to the surface to see if Earth is survivable. The premise of the story reminds me of the criminals sent to a colony in Australia. I’ve just spent two weeks watching every episode I could!

This obsession with these kind of stories is puzzling; I also love a good romantic comedy, the exact opposite of shows like The 100. Ed and I watched The Switch with Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman on Valentine’s Day. We both thought it was very cute and funny. We agreed that the lice scene was even funnier since we have lived though our own lice experience at home!

The MartianThe Martian by Andy Weir was another binge this week. I couldn’t put this book down! I read it when I should have been doing other things, such as feeding my children. An astronaut is accidentally thought dead and left behind on Mars. His struggle to survive on such an inhospitable planet is an amazing read.

That Lovin’ Feeling {Spin Cycle}

After a preschool Valentine’s Day party as a teacher, a 4th grade party as a room mom, and a Brownies roller skating party, I’m ready to put my feet up. I spent way to much time cutting out hearts last night, you guys. The results were worth it, though. The fourth graders, even the boys, had fun making heart sun catchers. Granted, there is no sun in this picture, but you get the idea.

However, while I put my feet up, I still owe you a blog post because I love you. And this week’s Spin Cycle post is all about what I love, after all.

The real question might be, how does love make you feel? I thought I was in love a couple of times before I met Ed. My sister and I spent long hours talking about love when I was miserably in love. More than once, like the song says, I lost that lovin’ feeling.

It doesn’t always take a man to get that lovin’ feeling. Today as I regained my confidence on my old inline skates, I remembered just how much I love skating. Zipping around the roller rink with my girls was so fun, but it was even more fun to see Emmy gaining her own confidence on roller blades.

Another thing I love is singing, especially those high notes. I’m a true soprano and oh! I love singing those descants! When my voice is warmed up and the high notes are on a vowel sound, they are effortless. I can feel that high A from the top of my head to the tips of my toes!

At this time of night, I love my cozy pajamas and a warm blanket. I’m reading a Longmire mystery right now. I can’t wait to publish this post and snuggle under the covers with my book. That’s definitely a different sort of love than rollerblading or singing.

Most of all, I love those two little girls cuddling under their own covers right now, and that man across the room from me reading his book. My true Valentines.

What do you love?
