And You Thought I Had Given Up on Knitting (Travel Tip Thursday!)

I am one of those unfortunate people who suffers from motion sickness. I get queasy on boats, planes, and cars. I’m always the person who insists on sitting in the front of the bus–the back is too bumpy! I do a lot of the driving on our road trips because firstly, I love to drive, and secondly, I’m less likely to toss my cookies.

Before Ed and I had our daughters, I would drive and Ed would read the crossword puzzles out loud for us to solve together. Unfortunately, the girls aren’t very tolerant of this way to pass the time while driving.

I also can’t read in the car without getting nauseous. I can read on a train; I can read on a plane…but a car? I turn green.

To help the girls pass the time on a long car trip, we borrow books on CD from the library. I hold up the book so that they can see the pictures while we play the CD.

This past February, I discovered something I could do in the car without getting motion sick; I can knit!

I started this scarf to learn some new knitting skills; I learning how to switch between knitting and purling in the same row, and I learned how to change yarn colors in my knitting.

It’s hard to tell from this picture;
this scarf is made from three different shades of blue.
Do you think I’ll finish it in time for winter?

What do you do to pass the time while traveling?

Do you have a tip to help me with my motion sickness?

Happy Travels!

  1. I can not read in the car. I can do very little in the car because, like you, I get very sick. I used those "Sea bands" when I was pregnant with Jonathan and have before for motion sickness and if I put them in the right spot they sort of worked. I've heard Bonine is supposed to work too, but it didn't do much to help me.

  2. I am extremely lucky to never get motion sickness, so I'm no help.Of course, as soon as I commit this to writing, I'll probably start getting it. I'd better knock wood. Anyway, knitting seems like the perfect activity. And it's productive, so you end up with something to show for your long car trip.

  3. I'm usually found singing quite loudly and passionately along with my iPod. Much to the dismay of my passengers, especially my son, I will often sing to the cars next to me as well. It usually brings a smile to their face and makes me giggle. It's a win win! Um, except for my passengers I guess. 🙂 And as luck would have it…I'm off on a little road trip tomorrow. I better go charge my iPod!BTW…your scarf looks great! I'm glad you found something you enjoy to do on your road trips!

  4. I'm glad you found something you can do in the car. I can do just about anything. My daughter can't and I read about ginger once and it helped her. Taking other medications for that just made her sleepy. Your knitting looks great!

  5. Funny… I used to be able to read in the car until I had my son. Now, I get terribly motion sick if I try it. Also, I get motion sick on swings now. Go figure!

  6. Good Job Ginny!!! I love scarves like that! 2 colors mixed like that… I want to make a red/white one…Thanks again for being part of "The Coffee Shop" And for your participation in our previous giveaway! Big Hugs!Paloma.

  7. Reading in the car always makes me nauseous and I'm not really prone to motion sickness. Sometimes chewing gum helps. Last time we took a long car ride, I was hoping to watch DVDs while the kids napped. I ended up spending most of that time with my head craned completely around while I tried to entertain a one year old. Not exactly relaxing but I didn't get car sick once. 😉

  8. I do nearly all of my knitting in the car. It's the only good thing about having an hour commute into the city 🙂

  9. I, too, get really sick if I try to read in the car. On the other hand, I can type as long as I don't spend too much time looking at what I'm writing. Knitting and crochet are also great ways to pass the time on long journeys 🙂
