There’s nothing better than a road trip to kick off summer! Last Friday, Ed came home at noon and the girls had an early dismissal from school, so we loaded up the minivan and drove to Des Moines. When Ed mentions that we’re headed to Iowa, people ask why. The simple reason is that my dad and step-mom live there. However, we are really glad to have an excuse to go to Des Moines. It has all the advantages of a big city without all the traffic. And most of the downtown parking is FREE! If you’ve ever parked your car in downtown Chicago, you know this is a BIG DEAL!
We love going to an Iowa Cubs game when we’re in town, and this year, we did it right. My dad has always wanted to rent a skybox, and this year he took the plunge and splurged on one! The ballpark is right where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers meet. The skybox could fit up to 20 people, so my step-mom’s family came along with some family friends.
Lily loves watching the game with Ed, but Emmy was concerned about only one thing: how was she going to get her cotton candy if we weren’t sitting in the stands? She even took a picture of the cotton candy man with my phone!
Emmy didn’t need to worry; one of the cotton candy vendors came up to the skyboxes selling cotton candy door-to-door. That’s Emmy’s kind of service! We also had a personal visit from the Cubby Bear.
But what about the game? If you’ve never been to a minor league game, they are a lot of fun. There are a lot of activities to keep the kids entertained; they shoot T-shirts out of a cannon and have other things to watch in between innings. Principal Park is such a nice stadium. Of course, we love Wrigley Field, but it’s not as clean and kid-friendly as Principal Park. As for the game itself, the ICubs scored a lot of points and won!

Aw, looked like such a fun road trip and hoping to get a few in for us this summer if possible, too!! 🙂

I can’t wait to read all about it! I’ve been terrible about visiting blogs lately. Hopefully I’ll be able to catch up this summer!
What a lot of fun. We are going to a baseball game in late June. Our seats are in the stands, but I’m sure we will still have a good time. Enjoy your summer!

A baseball game is fun no matter where you sit! Have a wonderful time!
I’ve been to a good number of Cubs games but never a minor league game. Sounds like fun! Especially in a skybox!

It was a lot of fun, and the skybox is a once in a lifetime experience for us, I think!

She’s my kind of girl: I looooove cotton candy! When at a funfair I need one, or the day is completely ruined.
As for kicking off the summer? Well, let’s just say summer here in Norway needs a big kick. The temperatures have hardly been in the teens and rain and wind win over sunshine nearly every day! I felt too depressed to write about that 🙁

I hope you get some warmer temperatures soon! I have to admit, I did eat some of Emmy’s cotton candy! YUM!

I visited Des Moines with my cousin and we really enjoyed ourselves. Had no idea the Cub’s minor league team plays there! Glad they won. That makes the games so much more fun.
It does make games more fun when your team wins! We can’t count on that when we go to Cubs games in Chicago, unfortunately!

I am glad all of you had lots of fun watching the game, and that Emmy did get her cotton candy. Des Moines as you describe it sounds exactly like I imagined it.

We’ve got a farm league team in town and you’re right. It’s a ton of fun to watch! And I don’t really like baseball that much! The kids get free passes for one game a summer and they ask and ask and ask until it’s time!
