Instant Parents of Teenagers

Ed and I have become de facto parents for our niece and nephew, 15 and 17, respectively. Their parents are in Disney World, having a kid-free vacation. So while this should be an easy gig, Ed and I are a little nervous. I sent them off to school today; our nephew has a car, so he’s taking care of driving them to school and soccer practice. However, they don’t want to eat dinner with us, and they want to do “homework” at home, which is about a 20 minute drive from our house. They have instructions from their parents to come to our house by 9:00 p.m.

“So, basically,” I asked my sister-in-law, “they’re just sleeping at our house?”

“Pretty much.”

I think Lily and Emmy would like to spend more time with them, so I invited them to come over for dinner tonight in case they change their mind. But I have steeled myself to not be disappointed if they don’t show up! I’ll call to check up on them, though. They’ll probably have McDonald’s every night for dinner.

Should be an interesting week!
