Drive

It was the first summer I had my driver’s license. My aunt let me borrow her silver Cadillac. My sister, cousin and I bounced into the car. We were going to the movies.

As we drove, our arm loosely draped out of the open windows, we turned the radio up and sang along at the top of our voices.

Highway to the Danger Zone.

We were going to see the best summer movie EVER.

I feel the need…the need for speed!

That’s right. We were going to see Top Gun.

While the silver Cadillac didn’t accelerate using g-forces, that sense of freedom on a warm summer night was exhilarating.

And I knew how to drive.

  1. I had my license in 2009 in Singapore and my US license last summer. The test here is definitely easier. I used to be nervous driving but now I enjoy it very much, but I need more confidence driving at night.

  2. Loved your spin on driving. Growing up in a farming community in north Texas, driving was more a matter of fact than a rite of passage. I was driving to Trab's little country store to get bologna and cokes when I was ten or eleven. And I was a late driver. My oldest sis drove and parked the family's International Harvester tractor at five. Next oldest sis drove the family car to have it inspected when she was ten. Growing up in a farming community in the 40's and 50's made for a different life perspective.

    1. I grew up in a farming community, but not on a farm. I once saw a classmate driving a tractor past my house…and I must have been in the fifth grade. Moving to the suburbs definitely changed my perspective on driving. Learning how to merge onto a Chicago highway was nervewracking, especially since I had spent most of my growing up years in a town without a stoplight!

  3. I got my driver's license and took a bunch of colleagues out to the nearest city. I promptly started driving on the right side of the road, which caused my colleagues to start shrieking, since we were in England and they drive on the left side of the road! I mended my ways afterwards, but they might have been feeling a tad uncomfortable sitting in my car after that! šŸ˜‰

  4. My parents started letting me drive when I was 14 years old as long as one of them was with me. When I finally got my license my parents had a humungous station wagon. At first it was embarrassing driving it around and then it was cool because I could pack all my friends inside and cruise around!
