Luck be a Lady

“Luck be a Lady tonight” was the song that kept playing in my head after I read Gretchen’s Spin Cycle prompt for today. That was one of my favorite songs when I was in the chorus for Guys and Dolls. I was “wealthy old lady from Texas.” In the opening scene, I strolled out on stage, a fox stoll around my shoulders, my hand on the arm of my “Rich Oil Baron” husband. Oh, that musical was fun!

Hello Dolly!

(I couldn’t find a picture of me in Guys and Dolls, so Hello Dolly with have to do. My sister is on the left and I’m on the right. If you watch the opening of Guys and Dolls below, you’ll see the Texas couple and the part I was supposed to be playing! You’ll have to click through to Lemon Drop Pie if you are reading in your email.)

When I was 27, I thought I was already out of luck. I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my doctor warned me that chemo might push me into early menopause. Then I took tamoxifen, which gave me hot flashes. For someone who wanted kids, it wasn’t looking good. To make matters worse, I was with a boyfriend who didn’t even want to get married, ever, much less have kids. He didn’t last long in my luck-less life.

I was down in the dumps.

If only I had known then what I know now. All I needed was a little faith.

Now, I am singing “I love you, a bushel and a peck” in my daughters’ ears as I hug them tight. Ya betcha pretty neck I do!

I am a lucky lady!

  1. AH! You ARE a lucky lady! And I LOVE Guys and Dolls too! One of my greatest regrets in my life was that I missed out on playing Adelaide by one year – only Seniors got the leads in my school's musicals, and we did G and D when I was a Junior. I was ROBBED I tell you! I would have been a GREAT Adelaide! Not lucky here!

I also wanted to thank you for posting on my blog (www.SweetSpiritWithinMe.blogspot.com) and the sweet and kind words you gave to me. I don't know how much you have read on my blog but I also am a Breast Cancer survivor, diagnosed at age 32. I look so forward to keeping in touch with you… take good care!! 🙂

  3. Over the years I had to realize that if we hadn't gone through those tough experiences, we wouldn't be who or where we are today. I think you are a lucky lady. Pretty girls! ;0)
